Abstract

We show how the description of multislit interference can easily be extended from grating diffraction to include reflection and refraction when the spacing between ruled lines becomes smaller than half the light wavelength. This extended description, presentable to an undergraduate audience, brings out the unity of geometrical and physical optics in a traditional optics course.
