“The objective of the Washtenaw County Rural Building Survey carried out for the Washtenaw County Historic District Commission and the Michigan History Division of the Michigan Department of State by faculty and students associated with the Eastern Michigan University historic preservation program has been to make a reconnaissance type architectural survey of heretofore unsurveyed farm houses, commercial buildings, and such public buildings as churches, township halls, and schools in Washtenaw County located outside the jurisdiction of incorporated cities and villages estimated to have been built prior to 1930.” (McLennan, 1982)

This collection includes the above Washtenaw County Rural Building Survey, and subsequent Washtenaw County surveys conducted by the Eastern Michigan University Historic Preservation Program prior to 2000. The collection is missing materials originally completed for the Rural Building Survey for Bridgewater Township and Lodi Township. Webster Township and the Southern half of Lima Township were excluded from the rural survey because they had already been surveyed for the Washtenaw Historic District Commission. (McLennan, 1982) However; some survey materials for Webster Township from 1981 are curiously included in this collection. Several townships were not completely surveyed due to time and personal restraints as detailed in McLennan’s report. Several areas are represented as subsequent student papers or projects, including neighborhoods in Ann Arbor.
