Abstract
The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) was first passed in 1974, and remains a key piece of legislation shaping juvenile justice and delinquency initiatives in the United States to date. In this entry, we provide a brief background on the passage of the JJDPA. We also describe the purpose, mission, vision, and structure of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Next, we describe the four core requirements of the JJDPA in turn, connecting the core requirements to findings from empirical studies. The entry concludes with a brief discussion of the current status and future of the JJDPA, including strides made since the passage of the JJDPA, and challenges that remain.
