Abstract

This entry provides current information about technology use in TESOL for intercultural communication. Computer-based learning has been impacted by information availability and rapidly changing technology. This entry acknowledges the significance of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and describes how technology affects ICC development, its effectiveness for ICC teaching, and its perceived benefits and challenges. Definitions for several important terms are provided to identify, conceptualize, and implement ICC with technology in relation to English as a second language learning and use. Research is briefly presented concerning how language learners in various projects have learned through CALL with telecollaboration and Web 2.0 pedagogies leading to best practices. Key information from several collaborative endeavors is presented to highlight practical technology applications for intercultural communication. Examples include incorporating reflective blogging, integration of graphics and video activities, and implementation of mobile devices. The entry closes with discussion of the importance of measurement and assessment of ICC.
