Reform and literacy education: History, effects, and advocacy
Abstract
This Chapter argues that teachers can and should learn to publically speak out to change the public narrative surrounding education, especially in a climate dismissive of teachers’ voices and professionalism. The author describes one in-service-a workshop on “Everyday Advocacy”-that is finding strategies to make advocacy a part of the everyday lives of teachers and highlights how specific teachers successfully employed these strategies to affect change in local literacy settings.
