Abstract
This chapter describes five principles for developing and implementing effective Community-Engaged Study Abroad (CESA) programs, designed to support pre- and in-service teachers in thinking locally in global contexts, while increasing a sense of agency and mutuality between the US university and Montenegrin host community. Each principle is illustrated with qualitative data from a successful CESA program in Montenegro that the authors co-developed and implemented for two subsequent years.
