Abstract
This project will result in a conditions assessment report of the historic Practice School on the campus of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. The conditions assessment report will analyze current building conditions and provide recommendations for the building rehabilitation. Recommendations will align with The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties Guidelines. The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties Guidelines are principles set forth by the United States Department of Interior. The guidelines aim to educate on appropriate methods to preserve historic architectural materials to retain defining architectural features.
Information provided in this document will support the goal of Elizabeth City State University to move the Practice School to its original site and rehabilitate the structure. Once rehabilitated, the building will serve as an interactive museum that interprets the history of African American education in the rural south. The site will also be a genealogy center for African Americans.
HistoriCorps has partnered with Elizabeth City State University on this project. HistoriCorps provided the field team that assessed the current condition of the structure. After the onsite visit, the HistoriCorps project management team used the findings to provide a preliminary scope of work and budget to Elizabeth City State University used for grant applications. This project expands on the onsite findings. The conditions assessment report provides a more in-depth analysis of the current Practice School conditions. It discusses the physical changes to the structure over time and includes rehabilitation recommendations for 1 project planning. The conditions assessment report will also discuss the history and importance of the practice school building.
As part of this final project, aside from the condition assessment report, three material assessment forms were created to assist in streamlining HistoriCorps' field documentation for future projects (See Appendix).
