Abstract
Materials development for teaching speaking has changed over time in response to methodological developments in the English language teaching profession. A wide range of materials is needed to address learners' needs for both social and academic language. This entry reviews some of the changes in second language (L2) pedagogy that have provoked necessary changes in materials, including a focus on communicative language teaching (CLT), a recognition of the importance of sociocultural influences on learning (i.e., contextual factors), and online and digital technologies. The entry ends with pedagogical implications and offers suggestions for creating and using materials in a classroom for teaching speaking.
