Abstract

As public library social work has expanded in the U.S., it has faced high expectations to address crises involving homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse. However, mismatched perceptions between library staff and social workers about their roles can hinder integration. When social workers are disconnected from other roles, this may lead to failed role integration and unmet patron needs. Drawing on the authors’ research and practice, this paper, grounded in role theory, will explore how its key constructs offer insight into the success or failure of integrating social work into public libraries.
