Abstract
This chapter explores the integration of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) into instructional design in higher education, addressing both its potential and its challenges. It introduces the SCALE Framework (Substitution, Co-Construction, Automation, Learning, Evolution), a progressive model for faculty AI literacy that builds on established educational theories like Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, UDL, and TPACK, as well as emergent AI-specific and sociocultural perspectives. The framework positions AI as a collaborative partner, guiding educators through stages from automating routine tasks (Substitution, Automation) to fostering more complex collaboration (Co-Construction), personalized learning (Learning), and transformative instructional redesign (Evolution). This chapter emphasizes the importance of iterative, practice-based approaches to AI integration, ensuring that technology augments rather than replaces human expertise, ultimately enhancing cognitive performance and supporting more personalized, impactful learning experiences.
